I mentioned Prince Eugene of Savoy a few weeks ago in my posts about the Belvedere. Recently I had the chance to visit his home at the Winter Palace and was further intrigued by the man. The Baroque interiors include massive battle paintings, exactly as you’d expect from the home of a famous military general. But other parts of the palace are quite refined and charming.

The Palace is tucked into a street near the Stephansplatz and is rather unremarkable from the outside. But it has been turned into a modern art museum, with its lavish Baroque interiors maintained as well. Each of the exhibits focused on a light effect or other color change that highlighted the contrast between the Baroque design and the modern element. It made for a trippy but interesting visit.

Once again, the room included this prism that created a number of effects when viewed from different angles…

And this…

This room had modern sculpture and a photography exhibit

And here’s the ceiling and chandelier in the blue room

This room did not have any modern elements other than the lighting, but it has this magnificent ceiling…

And a cool set of mirrors.
WinterPalace13
This room only had one rig – lights and a fan spin continuously, highlighting one section of the wall at a time.
WinterPalace24
I especially liked the color effects in this room

They change dramatically depending on what side of the room you’re standing
WinterPalace23
This room seems almost all Baroque…
WinterPalace29
Until you notice the giant cage set into one side
WinterPalace28
The cage somehow made the Baroque elements more lavish

Or more distorted… you decide.

I love maps. This room also seems appropriate for a general. The only new element here is the mirror on the left side.
