Throughout Old Havana are little time capsules, and one of my favourites is the Plaza Vieja, or Old Square. Its origin dates to the 16th century when it was known simply as New Square. The square was home to fiestas, bullfights, executions and all manner of other things over the centuries. Now it hosts a temporary exhibition of colourful chihuahuas. If that’s not historic irony, I don’t know what is. About 17,000 people live around the square today.
